Understanding the Layout Panes

• Many of the Open Content templates are designed to work best in full-width layout panes. That is why so many of the panes are not restricted in width to the main center body of the page.
• There is a central cluster of layout panes that are in a "Container" that automatically keeps any modules placed there centered within a 1286px wide region.
• Most rows in the central contained cluster of layout panes are split into columns based on percentage width of the container, into either 2 or 3 columns.
• As you become familiar with the different Content Templates, it will be clearer which ones work best in which layout panes. Some of the full-width panes are named after one particular use (e.g. "AccordionSection" or "CardSection"), but they are all just full width panes.

Which Layout Panes Should I Use?

All of the layout panes are available for use, but here is how they are mostly used on most of the template site pages.

• The "SectionBannerPane" at the top is usually used to display an NH-Banner Content Template identifying the page.
• Most of the pages have a left side column using the "Left40p" pane and a right side body content column using the "Right60p" pane.
• The FULLCONTENTROW pane is within a container. This is good for NH-Card content templates using Style Four, or NHI-Accordion content that doesn't need to go full width.
• The Footer panes were all populated with globally shared modules when your site was created. These can be edited (for the whole site) or new modules can be added with care.

Using the "Quick Module Add" buttons

These are an optional feature of DNN which should have been activated for your site. If you don't see these buttons, send a note to support to have them added.

• Make sure the page is in Edit mode - if not, click the Pencil icon at the very bottom left. You should see the layout panes outline on the page.
• The left-most Quick Add button is labeled "Open Content". You cannot change that.
• The second button lets you choose the targeted layout pane, and defaults to "ContentPane". Let's say you want to add a banner to the SectionBannerPane. From the dropdown menu here, choose that pane.
• To add the OpenContent module to the chosen pane, click the "+" button, and choose Top or Bottom. (You always have to choose one of these - it won't matter which if there are no other modules already in the pane).
• A new OpenContent module will be added to that pane, and you're ready to follow the next steps described below to choose and edit a template

Use the Normal "Add Module" buttons

The Quick Add buttons are faster if you're adding OpenContent templates, which will be most often. If you need to add any other type of module to a layout pane, or to add a copy or instance of a module from a different page, use the standard module-add buttons.

• Make sure the page is in Edit mode
• To add a NEW module, click the "cube" button
• A popup window showing all the available module types will open. Find the module needed (e.g. "HTML") and click that module.
• The image for that module will float above the page. Drag and drop the module into the desired page.
• To add an EXISTING module from another page, click the cube button with the "E".
• Click the drop-down next to "None Specified". You will see a tree site map of all the pages. Search or drill down to the page with the module you need to add.
• Once you have selected the page, a list of existing modules on that page will be shown.
• IMPORTANT! If you want a shared instance of the module (all changes affect all pages with that module), DESELECT the "Make a Copy" checkbox. If you want a copy that you can modify independently, leave the Make a Copy box checked.
• Click the module you need, it will hover, drag it to the desired layout pane.
